Insulin resistance

Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body’s cells become less responsive to the hormone insulin.

Normally, insulin helps cells absorb glucose (sugar) from the bloodstream to use for energy or store for later.

When someone has insulin resistance, their cells don’t respond effectively to insulin, causing glucose taking longer to clear as it is not taken up by the cells well and ends up in fat tissue.

This often leads to higher blood sugar levels that can greatly fluctuate and over time, the pancreas will produce more insulin to compensate. If this continues, it can strain the pancreas and increase the risk of developing prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, or other health issues like heart disease and obesity.

It’s commonly associated with factors like excess body fat (especially around the abdomen), a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet and genetics, though certain medical conditions (e.g., polycystic ovary syndrome) or medications can also contribute.

Lifestyle changes—like better nutrition, exercise, and weight management—can often improve or even reverse insulin resistance in many cases.
